Everyone deserves a great love story, and that is exactly what viewers will have in store for them when they check out 20th Century Fox’s upcoming teen romance film, ‘Love, Simon’.
Simon Spier (played by Nick Robinson) is an average high schooler with a not-so-average secret. I’ll spoil the secret for you right now (but not the movie)… he’s gay. Like many closeted teens, Simon is struggling to find the right time to come out to his parents, as well as the rest of the world. One day, Simon was lurking on his school’s gossip blog, and saw an anonymous poem posted by another closeted student who was comparing his life at the moment to a ferris wheel. Simon decided to reach out to the student, and they sent a series of emails to each other, both remaining anonymous.
Simon finds comfort in knowing his secret is safe with someone, even if it’s someone he has never met. However, he realizes his secret is in jeopardy when his classmate Martin (played by Logan Miller) gets screenshots of the email threads after Simon accidentally forgot to log out of his Gmail account on a school computer. Martin eventually blackmails Simon and lets the whole school know about his secret, which leads to Simon coming out to his family.
‘Love, Simon’ is a story of triumph, unconditional love, and a journey towards genuine self acceptance. It’s a very emotional story, especially because many viewers will be able to easily connect with the characters, and even the plot. One thing that genuinely stood out to me was the fact that the film did not portray LGBTQ couples and gay men as overly sexual human beings, as they are often portrayed in the media – and I want to thank Greg Berlanti, the director, for representing the community in such a beautiful manner.
This is a film that people of all generations can watch and enjoy together, but to all my fellow teens and young adults reading this right now: ‘Love, Simon’ is a movie that was made for us, and I especially encourage you all to support this film. I left the theater feeling even more proud of who I am, and proud that the world will be able to see such a powerful story on the big screen. I’ll put it this way – you will be SHOOK, and you will want to re-watch it multiple times.
‘Love, Simon’ comes out in theaters nationwide on March 16, and is rated PG-13.
