Ralph Breaks the Internet: Review

When I saw Wreck-It Ralph in theaters on opening day back in 2012, my fourteen year old self was over the moon. Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) were the definition of a dynamic duo. I was convinced that it could not be topped by any other film at the time, and should a sequel happen, it absolutely would not be allowed to disappoint – or else my teenage heart would have been just as broken as it was the day Zayn Malik left One Direction.

Fast forward six years later, I was not disappointed watching Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Vanellope is tired of the same old routine in her game Sugar Rush. Since Wi-Fi is a thing now, the arcade is taking a hit financially, and Ralph and Vanellope must venture into the Internet and work together to save Sugar Rush.

There’s plenty of pop culture references in this film, because let’s face it – Internet culture IS our culture. (If it weren’t, then why is my name pink”WIFI”?) There’s cameos from different Disney characters, a legend from the comics world that we just lost, and a very famous blue bus that had every child in the theater screaming and clapping.

There’s plenty of places where this movie could have turned into a cringe fest. Just the idea of making a film based around the Internet can sound questionable. Disney made sure that all the memes, website spinoffs, and clips featured in Ralph Breaks the Internet were carefully curated. It all just went together perfectly. It was a fun visual feast – one that had me leaving the theater more satisfied than I think I’ve ever been after any Thanksgiving meal.

Ralph Breaks the Internet opens in theaters nationwide on November 21.
