What A Time To Be Alive

As a Latina girl who grew up learning Spanish as a second language, my mom knew that early exposure was key… and that was true! The majority of television shows I would watch were in Spanish (including Dora The Explorer, who was teaching the viewers how to speak English). I remember almost exclusively listening to Mexican radio stations and music in Spanish.

ALMOST. The almost being that my dad exposed me to Doo-Wop music and both my parents introduced me to a little classic rock. My earliest memory of listening to music was standing on the sofa headbanging to “We Will Rock You” by Queen… before I even knew who they were and what headbanging even was! Did I stan? Yes – BUT THAT’S A STORY FOR A DIFFERENT DAY…

I had the Spanish thing down by second grade, and was a fluent speaker. However, that didn’t mean I could fully understand all the music I was listening to. Just like how in 4th grade I didn’t know what lollipop Lil Wayne was referring to. Now that I’m waaaaaay older, I can appreciate the music I grew up with on a deeper level. But, just because you can’t understand what a song is trying to say doesn’t mean the song isn’t a BOP.

I’ve made a playlist with a bunch of my favorite Latin songs from the 90’s and 00’s that I grew up listening to. I hope that it brings some of you back down memory lane. The early 00’s were fun, especially because we had REBELDE, my all time favorite telenovela. That was quality tv AND music right there. The irony is, RBD aren’t on Spotify. Thank God I still have all my CD’s 🌚

It was, as some people would say, a “time to be alive”. Enjoy the playlist!
