New Music Friday: March 8 – Worth The Wait

You know that feeling when an artist you love is teasing new music, but you have to wait days/weeks/months, maybe even years to hear it? Do you also know the feeling of joy and relief when that wait was worth it? If so, then awesome! You’ve successfully put yourself in my shoes for this week.

There were tons of great releases this week, but there were certain ones (such as Sigrid’s Sucker Punch) that I had especially been anticipating. Check out my picks for this week’s New Music Friday!

Louis Tomlinson – Two of Us

78 Productions

Louis Tomlinson is back with his new single “Two of Us”! The heartfelt track is dedicated to his mother, Johannah Deakin, who passed away in 2016.

In a news release, Tomlinson said it was a song he “absolutely needed to write”. “People say writing is a part of therapy and in a way, I feel like I’d been avoiding writing this song because I knew I only had one chance to get it right. I don’t mean to be too soppy about it, but if ‘Two of Us’ can help just one other person who’s going through the tough time that I went through, then that would make me really happy.”

I’m proud of you Tommo ❤️

The Black Keys – Lo/Hi

Nonesuch

“Lo/Hi” is The Black Keys’ first song in five years. While the duo have definitely kept themselves busy during the time of their hiatus, it feels so good to have Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney back in action together!

The track was recorded at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, and features their signature bluesy rock sound.

Okay uh… album. Pls. Thx.

SAINT PHNX – Shake

DDMN

Glasweigan alt-pop duo SAINT PHNX is made up by brothers Stevie and Al Jukes. Their newest single “Shake” is an electrifying track that will make you want to… shake!

“‘Shake’ is from the dark side of our album and describes the typical situation you find yourself in where you have to decide on what’s right and wrong,” explains band member Stevie Jukes. “The tale of having an Angel and Devil on each shoulder and you choose the selfish option that proves to be a reckless and everything crumbles around you. Everyone has a vice and it’s good to get to know it once in a while.”

This had me so shook (no pun intended) on my first listen. ENJOY it!

Ava Max – So Am I

Atlantic

Following up from her smash hit “Sweet But Psycho”, pop newcomer Ava Max is back with another dark fairytale-esque track. “So Am I” celebrates insecurity and individuality, and is just as catchy as her last release! It’s a fun track, and it’s good old fashioned pop music.

SASAMI – SASAMI

Domino

Whether I’m considered a 90’s baby or not, I definitely daydream about how walking around in a mall with a group of friends in the 90’s would look like and feel. If I were to star in a movie based around that, Sasami’s debut self-titled album Sasami would definitely be the perfect soundtrack.

Let Sasami Ashworth’s calming guitar riffs and vocals take you on a musical journey. Sasami is a very refreshing album, and is definitely one of my favorite releases of 2019 so far.

Sigrid – Sucker Punch

Island/UMG

Back in December, 22-year-old Norwegian singer Sigrid announced her debut album titled Sucker Punch would be dropping in March. It’s album release day, and I can definitely say that the wait was well worth it!

Sigrid brings fresh elements to the table at the buffet that is pop music. The versatility of her vocal range is a musical treat. Sucker Punch is easy to listen to, and is very satisfying yet so empowering.

Sabrina Carpenter – Pushing 20

Hollywood Records

“I’m pushing 20, got no time for others” are words Sabrina Carpenter wants to reinforce in her latest single, “Pushing 20”. While the singer’s 20th birthday may be two months away, the longing for a sense of independence that comes with being a certain age has been brought to our attention in the form of a fiery track with huge trap beats.

Following her success from “The Middle”, Maren Morris has released her sophomore album titled GIRL. GIRL shows the world that country music can be poppy, rocky, bluesy, and even electronic. The GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter delivers 14 powerful tracks on the LP, featuring collaborations with Brandi Carlile and Brothers Osborne.
