‘Breakthrough’ Review

There’s certain things that will happen in one’s lifetime that can only be described as a miracle. Sometimes these events can be hard to explain to others, and can be hard for many to believe. As a woman of faith, I definitely believe in luck, but I also believe that everything happens for a reason.

Some of us endure certain things so that we can be witnesses.

In Breakthrough, Joyce Smith (played by Chrissy Metz) is a loving mother who’s faith in God gets put to test when her adopted son John (played by Marcel Ruiz) suffers a truly life-threatening accident.

John had spent the night with his friends, and they decided to play on a frozen lake with their sneakers. All three boys ended up falling through the ice, being submerged in the freezing waters of the lake. While John’s friends were able to be rescued easily, John had fallen deep into the water. It took rescuers longer to find John than it took to find his friends. John was rushed to the hospital, completely unconscious.

The worst thing a mother could experience is having to say their final goodbyes to their child. However, Joyce believed that her son could completely recover and overcome such an unfortunate accident. Despite doctors and nurses trying to convince Joyce otherwise, she spoke life upon her son and kept her faith for the entire duration of the ordeal. After having the entire community rallying and praying for John, he miraculously made a full recovery.

Keep in mind, Breakthrough is based on a true story. The film is based on the book The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection, by Joyce Smith. The film is a powerful reminder that sometimes the impossible is possible, and is a treat to be seen on the big screen this Easter.
