‘Pokémon Detective Pikachu’ Review

When the trailer for Detective Pikachu first hit the web, I cringed a teeny tiny bit. Then I realized I was about to be watching this movie regardless, as with most movies I thought would be complete train wrecks. I began to have a little faith in Detective Pikachu, and I’m honestly glad I did.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) lives outside of Ryne City – a place where Pokémon and humans live together, work together, play together… they pretty much do everything together (hopefully they don’t…. uhh… I won’t go there). Tim’s father passes away in a bizarre accident, and Tim wants answers. He travels to Ryne City, and that’s where he meets Pikachu.

Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) has no problem conversing with Tim. The fact that he sounds like a normal human when he speaks catches Tim off guard. No other humans can understand Pikachu when he speaks – it just sounds like he’s saying his name in that cute uwu PIKAAAAAA voice we all know. While Tim becomes apprehensive at times, the two go off on an adventure in search of closure.

Tim and Pikachu are totally a dynamic duo, and there’s many light-hearted scenes in this film that will make you forget how sad the plot actually is… like… mans lost his father. Fans will love cheering when they see their favorite Pokémon on screen. The CGI is mildly disturbing at times, but I can imagine it could’ve been way worse. At least it wasn’t like Sonic the Hedgehog…

And of course, I cheered when I saw this guy on the screen.

Yup. Diplo made a cameo in this film, portraying a dj. What a shock! Another one of my favorite artists, Rita Ora, is in the movie.

While it wasn’t anywhere close to the most magical film I’ve ever seen, it was very fun to watch and had so many funny jokes. I would absolutely watch it again, especially being someone who loves Pokémon. I’m sure many others will be able to say the same!

Check out the official trailer below.

Catch Pokémon Detective Pikachu in theaters tomorrow!
