laye chats about ‘sicker’ music video

Montreal-based singer/songwriter laye is bringing something fresh to the feast that is the alt-pop world. laye has always been interested in the arts, and in 2015, she began to write her own music.

Since then, laye has carved out her own unique path. Earlier this year, she released her debut album lonesome. One of the stand out tracks from the album, “sicker” features laye’s signature smooth vocals, immersive drum patterns, and sprinkles of trap beats.

The music video for “sicker” is very intriguing. Check it out below!

I got to chat with laye about the music video, and her cool artistic visions.

Hi laye! So you’ve always had a passion for art, which is awesome! What inspired you to start making music?

I wanted to create something I was proud of and I always enjoyed singing- I wanted to be able to sing my own words.

How would you describe your sound (and aesthetic) to someone who’s never heard your music before?

I think it’s more of an alt-pop sound, on the darker side visually while the music is a bit brighter while staying moody.

Your debut album lonesome dropped earlier this year. Can you give us some details on how it was like making the album?

It was interesting in the way that it wasn’t how I had imagined making an album. The process was spread out over a few years and a lot of the songs were made without an album in mind, so it was definitely a different experience than I had expected and I had to do a lot of work in choosing the songs that I thought went well together sonically and meaningfully.

The music video for your track “sicker” just came out recently, and it’s stunning! How was it like making the video?

It was a lot of fun because I had such an amazing team behind me. The music video itself was directed by my makeup artist and friend, Summer O’Grady, who is talented in so many ways. The day we shot was so fun because it just went so smooth and we were all just excited watching the playback on set.

What’s the biggest piece of advice you can offer any aspiring musicians and creatives?

Keep on going. This industry isn’t one for quick results. If this is something you want then you’re going to have to just keep on pushing through- but make sure to not lose yourself in the process and to take care of yourself!
