Let’s Talk About ‘Rare’!

On Friday, Selena Gomez released her new album Rare via Interscope!

Sometimes it takes a few listens for a song or an album to “grow” on me. I can definitely say this about a large chunk of Revival – I just wasn’t feeling it right off the bat. There’s some tracks that still don’t fully resonate with me, and a lot of older songs from Selena’s catalog no longer make me feel the way I used to.

Was I as excited as I wish I had been for Rare? Not at all. We all know Selena has been through quite a bit over the past few years, and as bad as I’ve felt for her, I can’t say I really had any expectations for this album.

But you know what? I was in for a very pleasant surprise, starting with the title track that had me like

Overall, the album was very easy on the ears. Some of my favorite tracks are “People You Know”, “Kinda Crazy”, and “Ring”. To be honest, “Ring” is that chic, if you know what I mean. It’s so catchy!

I feel like Stan Twitter has been a hot mess over the past week or two. It can be easy to spend a lot of energy speaking out against artists and songs you don’t like. I think having integrity as an artist (no matter the medium) is extremely important, and I could sense that integrity on Rare.

While I haven’t seen Selena mention anything publicly about chart positions or streaming goals, I can bet thoughts of both enter her mind regularly. It just seems like a human thing. But if there’s one thing I could tell Selena, I’d tell her that she made a damn good album – and I really hope she’s proud of it.

I definitely am.
