I got to chat with Jack about the making of “Easy”, his journey as a musician, and more!

Hi Jack! So first off, tell us a little about yourself.

I am a 24 year old, singer-songwriter from Carmel, Indiana. I grew up playing sports and music was the LAST thing I wanted to do, because it wasn’t “cool”. Since, I have dropped all sports, play piano and guitar, live in LA and have just finished up recording my debut EP for 2020 & am writing my second right now (soon to be recorded).

What first got you into music, and when was that point when you realized yup, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life?

I realized that I wanted to do music for the rest of my life when I was in college. I was skipping class (sorry mom), playing guitar and piano for 8 hours a day, writing and creating. It is the coolest thing – I remember thinking, “I am creating something from nothing!” And that is a freeing and gratifying feeling, because you are simply ‘doing’ and taking action upon something where NO ONE has ever embarked on in history.

Your new single “Easy” is awesome! How was it like making the track?

I worked with producer, Brett Pemberton, on the track for Easy. Since we were working on a batch of songs at the time, we just threw together a quick sketch of the track within about an hour, let it sit and then decided to come back to it later on. We knew it was something special right away, and when we came back to it, it was done very quickly.

“Easy” was inspired by your previous relationships. Has it always been (no pun intended) easy for you to be vulnerable when writing music?

I believe being vulnerable is hard for anyone, generally speaking. I find that for myself specifically, it is hard to be vulnerable, but if I can do it one place – it is within music. My “Notes” file in my phone for songwriting is full of touchy subjects where I hold concepts + titles that I let NO ONE see…I just let people see final products, because I know I am ready to put those things in the world for, virtually forever, and let my fans into my life at a really personal level.

You have an EP set for release later this year. Are there any other exciting things you have planned for fans soon?

Yes – First and foremost, I have a lot of music videos coming with the music as well, where I’ve been blessed to work with some amazingly talented directors/producers. I also have a whole new EP I am writing right now as well, so there is PLENTY of music on it’s way!

What advice can you give to any aspiring musicians?

Keep writing, keep working on your voice or instrument and most of all – do what you do best. No one has your life story and that is what you get to write about. No one has your melodies that you are going to create. When in doubt – keep creating.

With everyone being quarantined these past couple of days, are you finding yourself working on your music a lot more?

OF COURSE! (haha) I am working on my songwriting craft, production and even doing FaceTime meetings with managers, publishers, producers and other artists/songwriters. Gotta stay productive!

What are some other things you’re doing to keep yourself occupied during this time?

I’ve been calling family to make sure that I keep level headed and have my priorities straight. Checking in with them to make sure everyone is happy, safe and healthy has been comforting. I have also taken the time to just do simple things like read a book, play video games (xbox live) with family friends I haven’t talked to in months and sad but true, SLEEP!

“Easy” is out now, so be sure to give it a listen! Jack has many more bops on the way, so be sure to keep up with him on Twitter and Instagram @jackconwaymusic.
