Katy Perry Spills New Album Secrets On Second #SmileSundays Stream

We’re a little under three weeks away from the release of Katy Perry’s new album Smile, and since today is a Sunday, this meant it was time for another #SmileSunday stream from Katy!

Here’s a quick recap of the sweet tea that was spilled on this week’s stream.

Katy kicked off the stream by giving fans updates on her pregnancy. “BabyKat” is due very soon, and we all wish her the absolute best! Katy also showed off the lenticular cover for Smile, which is available exclusively at shop.katyperry.com.

Speaking of special editions, Katy announced that the Target version of Smile will feature a bonus song called “High on Your Own Supply.” This song won’t be available on ANY streaming services, so plan accordingly. (Personally, I’ll be getting Target’s vinyl version, which comes in a gorgeous blue color. You can pre-order it here!)

Fans have been eagerly awaiting a music video for “Smile,” and it’ll be here very soon! Katy revealed that the music video will have a cool video game component to it. 2020 has been playing us all, so it seems very appropriate, right?

Katy showed off some fun items within her reach, such as a bedazzled clown nose, a Smile face mask, and a cassette version of the album. Using a boombox, she decided to play a game of “Smile Roulette,” playing snippets of songs from the album. Katy also used it as an opportunity to show younger fans how a cassette tape works!

Fans got a first listen of “Cry About It Later,” “Teary Eyes,” and “Resilient.” Katy took a moment to speak on the meaning of “Cry About It Later,” and said that it’s a song about simply “saying f**k it.” In her own words, the track is about “getting under someone. To get over someone, you have to get under someone, and you’re just going to be a sloppy hot mess for the night. Maybe consciously make the wrong decisions, which we all have done, and we do once in a while just to test the limits of life.”

Katy also dove into the songwriting process for the album, and mentioned that any song that didn’t make it to Smile will go towards KP6. When asked how many songs she writes for albums, she shared, “I usually write like 20 songs and then pick the best ones. There’s 12 and then Target has their own song, so that’s 13. There’s always a few that kinda just fall by the wayside that I listen to every once in a while and I go ‘was there anything special about it?’ and typically it’s like no. Some of them are good, but they don’t mean as much to me at the end stage when I’m planning what this book says, so they will sometimes find other homes… which is great!”

As a whole, Katy described Smile as being like “the seven stages of grief, but it’s the twelve songs of realizing rebirth of some sorts.” The tracks are sequenced in an order that tells a story, and as of now it’s safe to say this will be a story of resilience.

Smile arrives on August 28, so be sure to pre-save and pre-order it if you haven’t done so already!
