JChris, aka Chris Urquiaga, is putting a youthful twist on a classic summer song today!
The Maryland-based singer, songwriter, composer and producer has just released his take on “Macarena.” He really has one goal here: give everyone something they can dance to, no matter where they’re at!
“We don’t have dance clubs for the most part due to the pandemic,” he explains. “So, I want to be part of the solution. I want to give people a great track they can dance to anywhere, even if it’s from their house. People still feel the need to celebrate and dance, so giving them a dance challenge is a great way to incentivize them. It’s also perfect because ‘Macarena’ is a song that appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. The kids enjoy it because of its catchy melody and modern Afrobeat, and the adults like it because they remember the ‘Macarena’ very well.”
JChris has delighted audiences all over the globe – including at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The White House, The Library of Congress, and more! In January 2019, JChris was chosen to be the featured performer for the Hispanic Swearing-In Ceremony for the 116 US Congress. He has also performed for US Senators Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, Chris Van Hollen, US Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Joaquin Castro, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, and Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh.
It’s safe to say that JChris has plenty to dance about! Speaking of what inspired the track, JChris shared, “I was running around my neighborhood, listening to the 1996 hit ‘Macarena (Bayside Boys Remix),’ and a lot of melodic and rhythmic ideas came to mind. My vision was for this song to be an infectious dance craze. The original melody for the chorus came from my co-writer, Johnny De Jesus. We were writing over Skype (due to the pandemic) over a very catchy Afrobeat on beatstars.com. I was also inspired by all the wonderful TikTok dance challenges.”
