A Chat With RUNN

It’s time to enter RUNN’s sweet universe!

Originally making a name for herself within the dance music world, RUNN has collaborated with artists ranging from Illenium to Seven Lions, and has received support from Proximity, Trap Nation, and Spotify’s Mood Booster and Chill playlists! During the lockdown, she has made time to perform virtually, and recently appeared on Groove Cruise’s Virtual Sail Away, which donated 100% of proceeds to the Whet Foundation‘s COVID-19 Relief Fund. RUNN has also been working towards the release of her debut EP (which will be here very soon!)

Today, RUNN is offering another delicious taste of her forthcoming EP with her new single “Misery.” She describes it as a song “about the force of empathy – how two broken people can be beautifully supportive of one another. It’s easy to feel alone when you get lost in your head, and having someone who understands and joins you in that space rather than trying to fix it is amazing, and it can be your partner, your friend, your dog etc. I love this song because it’s such a happy sounding bop but with pretty heavy undercurrents.”

To help you dive even deeper into RUNN’s universe, we got to chat about “Misery,” how she’s been doing during quarantine, and so much more!

Hey hey hey RUNN! How’s it going?

Hello! It’s going so good!

First things first, I want to point out the fact that your style is SO cool! I can tell you really like pink, it’s a whole mood, we’re in this together haha.

Thank you so much! Haha pink everything always!

Sooo, your new single “Misery” is here! Can you tell us more about it, and how it was like creating it?

Misery was an idea that came to me while I was driving to a session in LA, I wasn’t in a great mood, and literally pulled up my hoodie while I parked and the first line of the song came into my head. I tossed it out in the room and my cowriters loved it and we chased the idea from there!  It evolved as we wrote it into a song about sharing an emotional state with someone, and how essential empathy is for people who struggle with depression.

“Misery” does have a really fun vibe, and super upbeat music like this has been helping me get through quarantine. What are some of the ways you’ve been keeping your spirits up during these times?

Ooh yeah it’s been kinda tough lately, the isolation and the constant unknowns can be really trying. I’ve mostly been trying to give myself a lot of patience and love, and not being too hard on myself. When I’m feeling stressed or down I usually try and go for a walk with my dog, and like a loooong walk, to really soak up the sunshine. I find a direct correlation to sunlight and my mood. I’ve also been zoom-writing with some of my favorite people, every week, and sometimes we don’t even write, we just chat and laugh and its super life giving.

Have you tried something new during quarantine that you don’t think you would have done otherwise? (For me, it was calligraphy!)

I’ve been cooking a lot! I’ve always enjoyed eating and cooking, but with all the extra time I got to explore more complicated things like making pasta from scratch! I’ve tried bread too but I failed every time haha. I’ve also been drawing and making crafts, its nice to be creative but with your hands instead of music haha

Very soon, you’ll be getting ready to release your debut EP. What should we expect from it?

The EP has the three singles Better, Handle With Care, and Misery as well as two new songs! They’re all little parts of me and my musical identity, so its a nice variety of styles, and while the first three singles have been really about my headspace and experience with depression, the last two songs dive into more emotional love stories. I wanted this EP to be an introduction to me, since people may have only heard me from my feature work, and this was a chance to really get personal.

Throughout your career, you’ve worked with artists like Illenium, yetep, and Seven Lions. What’s one of your favorite things about the dance music world?

I’ve always been blown away by the positivity and love that emanates from the dance music world. It’s amazing to see how supportive every artist is of one another, and there’s very little idea of ‘scarcity’ or cut-throat competition. I’m not a very ’sharky’ person, so its been really encouraging to me that there’s no need for that in dance music. Every person I’ve worked with has been so kind and supportive, I feel very blessed.

How did you get your start in music?

I’ve always been musical in one way or another, but it took me a little bit of wandering around it until I found my voice as an artist. I studied songwriting at Berklee in Boston, and when I came to LA I wrote for other artists for years, which I’m really thankful for because I learned so much from everyone I worked with. Now it’s become about my story and my voice, and its been so fulfilling

If there’s one piece of advice you could give yourself at the beginning of your journey in the music world, what would it be?

I’d say “Your story is worth telling, and while it might take you longer than you expect to find your voice, you will always be where you’re supposed to be at that moment”

Finally… What’s your all time favorite movie?

Ferris Bueller’s day off! Haha – so old but I could rewatch it literally 100 times. I try to live by his quote “life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it”

“Misery” is out now, so be sure to check it out! You can keep up with RUNN on Twitter @_watchmerunn and Instagram @watchmerunn.
