RAPID FIRE QUESTIONS
Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like creating / recording “Remember”?
I had originally connected with Frank Walker for a remix of my single “With You” back in early 2019. The remix was very successful in Canada and we forged a relationship from there. Fast forward to the summer of 2019, Frank reached out to set up a session. I came into the writing session excited about a guitar riff I had thought up days before getting together. That guitar riff ended up being the intro to the song. The song was extremely fun to write to. Once we had a musical structure in place we explored different melodies and lyrical concepts until we landed on ‘Remember’ as something that resonated with us. We finished the song in about 5-6 hours. I cut vocals that day and Frank and Nick Henriques (the other producer and co-writer) brought it to life with their production. The song was originally intended to be a Frank Walker record with me as a feature but myself and my team we’re so excited about the song that we decided it was a great option to enter this next phase of my career.
What does the song’s theme mean to you (especially now amidst a pandemic)?
The song’s theme is about escaping a difficult time and celebrating the best in ourselves and the good in the world. During a pandemic it’s taken on a reflective meaning about how life once was. There is a narrative of a broken relationship sewn into the song lyrically but the production and overall vibe is more jubilant and celebratory of the good times.
What’s one of your favorite memories of making the music video?
This video was challenging. It was an overnight shoot in Toronto, Canada and everyone was wearing masks and socially distancing. It was hard to see whether or not people we’re reacting to my performance with masks on. I am by no means a dancer, but being able to freely move and have fun in front of the camera was liberating. There were several different set ups but this was one of the first videos I’ve ever filmed where I didn’t have an instrument in my hand or a specific narrative to act to. Very performance based.
