A Chat With Madison Olds

Kaylee Smoke

Picture yourself hanging out on the balcony of a luxury apartment in a big city. It’s nighttime, and you’ve just poured yourself a drink. Not a single care in the world has entered your mind… you’re just celebrating the moment. You’re blasting music, and deciding what to play next on your swanky sound system. Well, “3’S a Crowd” by Madison Olds just happens to be the perfect song for the scenario!

On Friday, Madison Olds dropped her new single “3’S a Crowd.” It’s the singer/songwriter from Kamloops, British Columbia’s second single of 2020, following “Best Part of Me.”

A fancy song deserves some fancy treatment, so Madison and I got to chat about it! We also imagined being in crowds again (in a COVID-free world, of course) and more. Go ahead and read below!

Hey Madison! Would you mind diving into how “3’S a Crowd” came about and basically what these lyrics mean to you?

When the idea for this song came about, it wasn’t meant to have too much complexity to it. It was meant to be fun and flirty and kind of be left up to the listener for interpretation. It’s obvious this song is about exploring love and lust, but every time somebody new listens to it, they put their own spin on how they see the story. It’s been a really cool experience to see how people have envisioned this song for themselves!

What was your favorite part of the process of creating “3’S a Crowd”?

We sort of wrote and recorded this song at the same time. So anytime we’d get a section done, I’d hop on the mic and put down what was happening. This was actually one of the first times I had a session like this, so everything felt fresh and exciting. Not to mention the style of this song was something I had never explored before either so I guess I loved the bass driven pop-y feel to it.

Since we’re still in a pandemic, I guess you could say having three people together right now really can be considered a crowd! If you could choose two other influential figures to have a (virtual) hangout session with, who would they be?

Hmmm… I think if I could have a virtual hang session with anyone I would probably pick Harry Styles and LP. They just seem so badass and down to earth. Not to mention I feel like we’d come up with some sort of banger haha.

I see you constantly engaging with your fans (and other artists too!) on social media in such a positive way. Have any of these interactions influenced your creative process in some capacity?

With social interaction being pretty much cancelled for 2020, social media is kind of the only way to make friends and industry contacts right now. I’m always trying my best to make everyone feel welcomed and supported and through that I’ve made some pretty great friends that have led to some even better song and press collabs.

Now that “3’S a Crowd” is out, what is something you hope listeners keep in mind when they’re checking it out?

I hope listeners just have fun when listening to this song and don’t take it too seriously. It was meant to be the song you put on while having drinks with some friends, maybe dance a little, and not have a care in the world. I want people to feel their best self and empowered like anything is possible ;).

Is there anything else you’re really looking forward to in 2020 that we should know about?

It seems as though everything has been put on hold besides releasing and writing. So, while there aren’t any major events coming up that I’m looking forward to yet, I am hoping this year has at least one more release in store!

To wrap things up, what’s one of your favorite memories of being in a crowd? (Whether it be at a concert, sporting event, or someplace else!)

This is going to sound totally cheesy and it’s not music related at all, but one of my favourite memories of being in a crowd is going to Disney world. I love the magic the park exudes and just how special it is to see everybody there being brought back to a time of their childhood or experiencing the magic of youth. Anytime I’ve had the chance to visit, I have cried, and if all of a sudden life went back to normal in that sense, that would be the first place I’d go.
