What were you doing last summer? Sitting around your house not doing much because the pandemic ruined all of your festival plans?
Okay… that was 100% me. No festivals, no Vegas pool parties, no concerts, no getting disoriented when exiting the subways in LA, no amusement parks, none of it. And boy, do I miss it.
There were plenty of times when I could’ve used a pick-me-up, but that won’t be an issue this year! Today, Tokyo Machine, Weird Genius, and Lights got together to bring us all “Last Summer,” an addicting electro-pop jam that will definitely be played all throughout this upcoming summer.
“There was something sweet about the track, sweet enough that it could almost be sad,” says Lights. “So I wrote something bittersweet because everything sweet needs some bitter. The past year has made a lot of us look back on better times, for better or for worse. Here’s one of mine.”
Last month, Lights linked up with Illenium and Dabin for “Hearts on Fire.” “Last Summer” marks her debut with Monstercat, and her vocals were just the right touch for the song. This three way collaboration was meant to be!
Tokyo Machine had been eyeing Weird Genius ever since he saw them play at Ocean Meets Music. He had been longing to work with them on a song, and now this dream has finally come true! has been bringing video game influences and bass together, and has been given a thumbs up from artists like Tiësto, Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Dillon Francis, and more.
“EVER SINCE I SAW WEIRD GENIUS PLAY THEIR SET AT OCEAN MEETS MUSIC, I KNEW I WANT TO WORK WITH THEIR INSANE TALENT,” he says. LIGHTS VOCALS PUT THE CHERRY ON TOP FOR THIS RECORD, TO BE ABLE TO TEAM UP WITH BOTH OF THEM IS A DREAM AND I’M SO EXCITED FOR EVERYONE TO BE ABLE TO HEAR OUR COLLABORATION! HOPE EACH ONE OF YOU TAKES SOMETHING OUT OF THIS SONG A PIECE THAT RESONATES WITH YOU.”
Weird Genius have also been huge fans of Tokyo Machine, and have been influenced themselves by his work as well. Weird Genius’ 2020 single “LATHI” smashed records, and sent the trio to the top of the dance charts. They’ve collaborated with artists such as Lil Baby, Yellow Claw, Rich Brian, and enjoy including Indonesian traditional elements into their songs. They shared, “For this collab, we wanted to make something that perfectly expresses our signature sounds but is presented as a catchy pop tune. We had lots of fun making this track and we hope you guys enjoy it!”
