At one point or another, the pandemic has left many of us feeling stumped. Sheffield-based Sophie and the Giants were not exempt from experiencing these feelings either. During the first lockdown, the band questioned if they could even continue making music.
The answer to that question turned into a yes, and they’re proving it today with their new single “Right Now.” Frontwoman Sophie Scott wrote the song as a sign of hope for the new year, and the desire to pick up right where things were left off. She says, “There was no doubt things were bleak when I wrote it, but an entire generation has lost a year of its life, and we’re about to make up for lost time. We’re going to lose our collective shit once we’re allowed out again.”
Doesn’t that deserve an amen?!
As a teen, Sophie Scott joined a choir, which led to her being able to perform at Wembley Arena. It was a huge confidence boost for Sophie, as she experienced persistent bullying in school for having red hair. However, writing music in her own bedroom was what brought her joy like nothing else. Sophie went on to attend music college in Surrey, which is where she met her bandmates. They roughed it out in a house together for a year, which led them to realize just what it means to be a band.
One of those things is being there for one another, no matter what. Just like Sophie and the Giants’ music is there for everyone at any given time of the day, anywhere you can access it.
“Right Now” follows “Hypnotized,” Sophie and the Giants’ massive collaboration with German producer Purple Disco Machine. Sophie co-wrote the single, which ended up reaching triple platinum status in Italy, and gold in six other countries. The group will certainly have a ton to celebrate with fans in person, and that day will be coming soon!
Sophie says, “In a time where we feel lost and stuck in an endless cycle, we want to feel those real-life highs again and we want it now more than ever. ‘Right Now’ is a song about the frustration we’re all feeling, about how we want to be let loose upon the world again. We hope wherever people are this will give them the feeling, if only for a moment, that anything is possible again”
