We’ve all experienced burnout at some point in our lives, and the feeling isn’t comfortable at all. But at some point, we must ask ourselves – what kept us going in the first place? That in itself can be enough motivation to keep pushing, but sometimes you just need to hear it from someone else.
Today, you’ll hear it from Dava with her new single “New Ceilings.”
Dava grew up in between Texas and Oklahoma, and was raised by her grandma for a pretty large chunk of her life. Dava’s mother had passed away when she was only eight, and music started to become an escape from all of life’s twists and turns.
Equipped with a guitar her mother had once gifted her, Dava would write songs and just let her creativity flow. Then at 18, Dava moved to Colorado, and let her talents shine at coffee shop open mics. The experiences helped her to find her voice as a singer-songwriter, and soon enough, the universe led Dava to Los Angeles.
It’s pretty well known that LA is a city filled with palm trees and folks from all walks of life chasing their dreams. For many, part of the pursuit includes making sacrifices that may not be the most ideal or pleasant. Time that was originally allocated for friends and family can turn into time spent at the studio. Money set aside for a fun weekend getaway may easily turn into money going towards paying a photographer.
It can also be a very lonely journey. While someone may be surrounded by plenty of people who seem to be chasing similar goals, it’s very possible for feelings of insecurity, isolation, and helplessness to turn into your main company. The threat of loosing sight of your goals is constantly lingering, but the desire to be in a better position than last year, last month, or even yesterday, will always be the more powerful force.
In “New Ceilings,” Dava reflects upon some of those sacrifices she’s had to make during her career. The narrative is all about regrouping, and resuming the fight to be better than you were before. In a video shared on her YouTube channel last week, Dava opened up about one of the experiences that helped yield the creation of the song.
“This song was written about survival and staying true to yourself,” Dava further explained in a statement. “I was having a hard time financially after moving to LA and my phone was shut off while on my way to this session. I was upset with myself for prioritizing music when I really needed the money from driving Uber to stay afloat. The day I wrote ‘New Ceilings’ I was angry and I wanted a song that felt empowering and validated all the work I had put in up to that point. I ended up choosing different songs for my project but when I revisited this one year later, I felt it needed to be heard because of how authentically it embodies my struggle.”
As Dava continues to share her stories with the world, she’ll also continue to reach those “New Ceilings.” Last summer, Dava made her Disruptor Records debut with “ASOS,” followed by “Right Time” and “Papercut.” An EP is on the horizon, and so is a future that is brighter than the sun.
