What the heck is a blue night?
Well, according to Alex Shera, it’s a vibe! Sometimes, you can never fully guess where a vibe will take you. This one however, sent Alex Shera straight to the studio.
After spending his childhood and teen years growing up in San Diego, Alex Shera relocated to Los Angeles in pursuit of a career in styling. It was a move that required some pretty big lifestyle adjustments, but Alex found himself able to adapt quickly.
“In San Diego, there’s more of a surfer and beach town type vibe,” he emphasized in our conversation. “LA is more of a metropolis of all different kinds of cultures, people, and you get more of an influx of different energies and personalities.”
But for Alex, one thing simply lead into the next. A desire to get into photography helped get the ball rolling. After a friend found Alex an internship with a photographer who worked with major fashion publications, Alex managed to use it as an opportunity to take his interest in styling to the next level. Soon enough, Alex had a client roster of his own. He’s helped style artists such as TYGA, Zara Larsson, a (then rising) Marshmello, and many many more.
Alex has had a passion for music from an early age. “I literally watched the sound of music on repeat until I broke the VCR tape, because I watched it so many times,” he recalled. There were a few moments in his life when music was placed on the back seat, but the desire to jump back in only grew as time went on. Having worked with various artists (and other stylists who worked with musicians), Alex picked up on exactly what goes into the process of writing, recording, and releasing music.
By now, you can probably guess where this story is heading. It was time for Alex to just go for it! He explained, “As I got older and more comfortable with myself, I think I was like, okay I’m ready to try this music stuff on my own. I talked to some friends who were involved in music, and we just started writing together. We got into the studio and saw how that worked, just recorded some demos, and went from there. From there, I got to work with some other people, and it was kind of a ripple effect. Luckily, I was able to start releasing music on my own.”
“It’s always been within me, but I just kind of more recently had the courage to step out into the forefront.”
Last year, Alex released his debut single “Fire,” a song about pulling through your struggles and being able to help someone else out in the process. “Blue Nights” arrives just a few months later, and is centered around Alex’s memories of “being on the outside looking in.”
“I had a group of friends, and we were all kind of like the Real World living in the same house kind of co-mingling,” he recalled. “There were different relationships and things going on, and I played off that whole atmosphere and created the song. I was just thinking about a girl and a guy (or whoever) you have a friendship with, you both have feelings for each other, but you never really act upon it.”
