Summer is right around the corner, and many of us can’t wait to make up for lost time. A nostalgic indie-pop bop can easily make that excitement escalate, and thanks to Abigail Osborn, it’s about to happen!
Growing up in Denver, Abigail Osborn was quite involved with musical theater. When Abigail was around 15 years old, she taught herself how to play the guitar. She began to play in her worship band, and started mixing and mingling with other musicians. She had always been intrigued by the process of writing songs as well, but didn’t start until she turned 17. But once Abigail had that under her belt, she played shows around Denver, and even assembled her own backing band.
Then at 19, Abigail embarked on her very first tour. She ended up moving to Nashville, originally to finish school at Belmont University. “I was really pleasantly surprised to see how many things are going on here that aren’t country,” she shared. “There’s this stereotype that it’s the ‘country music capital of the world,’ but there’s a lot of really awesome pop stuff happening here.”
While Abigail did drop out, she made tons of friends who shared a passion for making music! She noted, “At this point, all my friends are all doing really cool stuff. It’s super inspiring to get to see it all around me. It makes me want to be better, and it just makes it all a super good time!”
In time, Abigail decided to launch her own solo project. Last month, she released her first single “Drive All Night,” based on a memory she couldn’t let go of!
“There was one specific day in the fall of last year where I was driving around in my car,” Abigail recalled. “The sun was setting, and I had my windows down. I had just gotten back in town from visiting home in Denver, and when I was back in Denver I reconnected with someone who I had dated a while ago. We always used to go on these long drives together, and it felt like we picked up where we left off. The whole time I was with him, I had the feeling of not wanting this night to end… just because it’s so nice being next to someone in a car when you’re driving. I got back to Nashville, and it was so beautiful as the sun was setting. I was like dang, I wish they were in the passenger seat.”
It always feels great having company while experiencing the little moments in life that many will take for granted. Sometimes it can even feel rejuvenating, and Abigail wanted to capture the magic of it all in a song. She said, “I took it to my co-writer (Regan Rousseau) and was explaining that feeling to her. She was like, ‘oh, I think everyone feels that!’ The song kinda just came out after that. I was just like yeah, here’s the story of me and this dude, pretty much laid out as it is. I think we captured that whole sentiment in the exact way I hoped for.”
The newly released “Drive All Night” music video is a highly cinematic affair, and so is the song in itself! But if Abigail could place the track in any movie, it would totally be The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She spilled, “All the visuals were inspired by the one scene in the movie when they’re driving in the tunnel, and she stands up and opens her arms. In my opinion, when the chorus hits in ‘Drive All Night,’ it feels a lot like what that feeling would be. Your heart is racing, and all you’re thinking about is the moment that you’re experiencing then. We even tried to emulate that by finding a cool tunnel in Nashville for the video. We have a couple shots driving through that, and it was fun to see that feeling come to life audibly and visually.”
Whenever Abigail is writing music, she strives to create something she can throw on a playlist or two. Night drives in the summer require an epic soundtrack, and “Drive All Night” is the perfect song to blast through your speakers. As more people start to get vaccinated, we can only hope that this upcoming summer will be filled with drives around town with friends. Besides hitting the road with her buddies, Abigail is planning on releasing even more music in the coming months. She’s very excited, and she did admit “It’s hard to keep it all in my computer and not want to share it all right away!”
Well… who could blame her?
