If you love a good coming-of-age story, just wait until you hear John-Robert’s!

Actually, you don’t have to wait at all. His new EP Healthy Baby Boy, Pt. 1 is out now, and it taps into just about everything you’d want to know about his experience with “adulting.”

John-Robert grew up in the very small town of Edinburg, Virginia. He received a guitar as a 12th birthday present, and started posting covers on YouTube not long after. Throughout his childhood, he’d also perform at open mics, never passing up on an opportunity to show off his talent. Upon graduating high school, John-Robert was offered a scholarship for Berklee, but that wasn’t quite his calling.

The universe was pulling John-Robert in a different direction… (West!) He went out to Los Angeles to work with a producer, but unfortunately things started heading south a few months later. John-Robert ended up moving back home, questioning whether life even had anything to offer him. He soon realized he could channel his feelings into recording his own music, and he got right to it!

Once 2019 came, John-Robert released his debut single “Adeline.” It was met with open arms from listeners all over the world, amassing 800,000 streams in a matter of months. Every story John-Robert had to tell at the time came together with his first EP Bailey Barely Knew Me, released the following year.

The story telling continues with Healthy Baby Boy, Pt. 1. The title track “Healthy Baby Boy” sets the stage, focusing on the cycles of life, love, and loss. It all goes hand in hand, and it’s a huge part of the young-adult experience. John-Robert found inspiration for the project from “the confusion that comes with transitioning from your teenage years, into your 20’s—navigating depression, romance, self-reliance, and a completely new environment.”

There’s also songs like “Move It To The Side,” which elaborates on that feeling of helplessness when thoughts of someone you used to love enter your mind. Whether they’re 100% unprovoked or not, they’re not fun, and might even make you regret your time with the person in the first place!

Contains scenes with mild fake blood

The whole experience of living in your 20’s can be stressful. Thankfully, the chillness of John-Robert’s music offers us a golden opportunity to enjoy the moment. He referred to Healthy Baby Boy, Pt. 1 as “a serious coming-of-age story that I have not yet had the pleasure to grow out of.” But somehow, John-Robert managed to make growing up sound a whole lot more pleasant.

Listen to Healthy Baby Boy, Pt. 1 below, and say hi to John-Robert on the gram @johnrobert!
