Olivia Lunny Is ‘Sad To See You Happy’

Being sad to see someone happy sounds like a fun play of words… almost as fun as Olivia Lunny’s latest single!

Olivia Lunny has been writing music and building up her own empire since she was twelve years old. Growing up in Winnipeg, Olivia covered quite a bit of ground as a young artist. She performed to a crowd over 40,000 people at the Winnipeg Folk Festival when she was only 14, and earned a Western Canadian Music Award for Pop Artist of the Year at 17 for her debut EP.

After catching the attention of producers from the tv series The Launch, Olivia participated in the second season and ended up winning the competition. In early 2019, she went on to release “I Got You,” and kept the energy going by performing at events such as WE Day in Winnipeg and Ottawa. Now at 22, Olivia is signed to Universal Music Canada and preparing to release her debut album!

But first, there’s “Sad To See You Happy.” Olivia hopped in the studio with Jenson Vaughan, Shaun Frank and AJ Healey, and together they all started experimenting with words and phrases that sounded ironic. “We were playing around with words and found ourselves exploring the concept of ‘love you to death’ and being ‘sad to see someone happy’,” said Olivia. “We loved the idea of playing off of an oxymoron – this was the through line in our songwriting process. Sad to See You Happy is a very fun, vibrant song at first glance, the lyrics however, are subtly darker and reminiscent. The contradiction of these two make for a unique combo and will hopefully leave the listeners intrigued and dancing along!”
