When the day finally comes where you complete a huge project you’ve worked so hard on, you may be wondering what comes next. Those thoughts might be running through 23-year-old Jess Spink’s mind right now, alongside thoughts and feelings of accomplishment!
Today, the UK-based singer/songwriter released her debut EP Where It Goes from Here, a heartfelt collection of seven songs reflecting upon her experiences of growing up in today’s world. Jess has been turning to music as a form of self-expression since she was a child, storing lyric ideas and melody ideas on her phone and letting it all flow while sitting in front of her piano at home. She decided to study contemporary music while studying in Guildford, and soon found herself in the studio collaborating with other songwriters and producers.
Many of the ideas Jess had been holding in for years started coming to life, but she felt a slight disconnect with certain aspects of the release process. After being offered a job at a major record label, she started to get an even better idea of everything that goes into releasing music. She continued to write music during this time, and started creating visual experiences to be paired with her songs.
Jess soon realized that it was time to pull the trigger, and released “Same but Different” in October 2020. More singles followed, all leading up to Where It Goes from Here. The project is centered around Jess’ pursuit of happiness and freedom after a breakup that left her feeling stuck. In “Same But Different,” “If I could Leave,” and “I’m Not Yours,” Jess taps into the wide array of feelings she experienced during this time. Heartbreak and loss eventually turned into love and acceptance, and Jess realizing she’s stronger than ever! There’s also “Eleven,” a recollection of Jess’ feelings after her parents separation, “Out Loud,” a song surrounding the anticipation of telling someone just how you feel about then, and “Love Last,” a tasty electronic summer anthem about wanting to be treated with the uttermost respect at all times.
“This EP has my blood sweat and tears in it,” says Jess. “Every song is special to me in different ways but they’re all completely raw and personal. Based on situations that have helped me learn and grow stronger, I’m grateful to have songwriting and music as an outlet. I can’t wait for other people to hear the songs and hopefully relate and find comfort in my music. I know where I want it to go from here and that’s exciting, bring it on!”
As the world starts to open up again, Jess is ready to open up even more for her fans. Having built a tight bond with her listeners throughout the lockdown, Jess is eagerly awaiting for the day when she’ll be able to bring the songs on Where It Goes from Here to the stage! She hopes to inspire others to make positive changes in their lives, as well as amplifying the voices of other young women in the music world. She says, “Male artists and songwriters are still dominating the writing rooms, album charts, label boardrooms and Awards scene, yet there is a wealth of female talent around. I want to get my music heard as part of a move to empower women in music, including female songwriters, producers, musicians and artists to redress the balance and break down barriers.”
