If the music of The Marías was meant to be kept a secret, one would have no option but to do the exact opposite. The alt-pop band from LA released their new single “Hush” on Friday, a gem completely capable of making someone feel like they’re walking through a tunnel with red lighting as they’re holding a baseball bat, dressed in all-black, and on the way to do… something daring.
Simply put, it’s cinematic, and it’s not coincidental at all. Cinema is what truly brought lead singer María Zardoya and drummer Josh Conway together back in 2016. María moved to Los Angeles during that year, and met Josh after a performance at Canter’s Deli’s Kibitz Room. The two started writing music together, met some friends along the way, and The Marías were born! But the real reason María and Josh bonded was thanks to requests for writing music for movies.
We’d receive a synopsis of a scene, and then we’d have to write music to it within a couple of days,” María mentioned. “Not only did that teach us how to write songs together fairly quickly, it taught us how to think like filmmakers. We’d imagine worlds in our minds based on the synopses – the colors in the scene, the lighting, the actors, the set design, and of course, the music.”
It’s only appropriate that The Marías’ debut album will be titled Cinema. Arriving on June 25th via Nice Life and Atlantic Records, Cinema will pay homage to the group’s beginnings as well as the films and directors María and Josh have long admired. Check out the trailer below!
