Mad Tsai grew up in Huntington Beach, and always seemed to be doing something music related. He took piano lessons for seven years, was in marching band for three, and participated in many choir groups in between. However, he never truly felt like he fit in, and was even hesitant to release his own music!
But just a few months into the pandemic, Mad Tsai gained a huge boost of confidence and decided to start a TikTok account. It’s a good thing he did – Mad Tsai has amassed over 2 million followers on the platform, and millions more have been treated to clips of his unreleased songs.
Then in December 2020, Mad Tsai released his debut single “Boy Bi,” a dreamy synth-pop serenade confronting the nightmare that is constantly being asked about your sexuality. As bright and cheery as the melodies are, the lyrics can remind us that at the end of the day, all of our experiences are unique. We are who we are, and having to explain it to someone can be insanely difficult. Mad Tsai simply wanted to tell his own story through this song, and he’s doing it again through the brand new music video!
Mad Tsai says, “I grew up watching these John Hughes coming-of-age films without ever seeing somebody that accurately represented my coming-of-age story—someone who is LGBTQ+ and Asian-American—so I wanted to create my own narrative that talked about these issues through the lens of a cheesy teen film, which I took inspiration from movies like ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘The Breakfast Club.'”
