Society can really have a way of making others feel guilty for just being themselves. If this has ever left you shaking your head, Valley is back today with a tune that will leave you nodding your head instead!
Just like every other young person growing up in today’s rapidly changing world, the Canadian alt-pop band has experienced their share of frustration and confusion. Many of those feelings were channeled into their previous single “Like 1999,” which conveyed a desire to go back to a time when everything seemed more simple.
With their new single “SOCIETY,” Valley takes a stand and declares that despite what those around them might demand, they’ll stay true to themselves. It also offers a nod to “You Get What You Give” by The New Radicals and “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus, two 90’s anthems the band deeply loves.
Member Rob Laska says, “To us, both those songs have such an uplifting chorus but lyrically deal with some frustration with the world / pop culture and just not letting it get you down. They both lyrically touch on not following the rules just because you’re told to; trusting your own beliefs and making your own decisions.”
“’SOCIETY’ tells a story of how our career can sometimes feel,” Laska continues. “We exist within an ever-changing creative industry full of opinions and music machines making everything go round. At times, what you truly have to say as an artist can feel diminished or not as important when it comes to the context of making a product or something that people will label as sellable and listenable. At the end of the day, ‘SOCIETY’ is Valley accepting the terms and conditions of our identity, songs and career, the fact that we’ll never be able to please everyone but also coming to terms that no matter what the public considers to be a ‘hit,’ we tell ourselves we’re always going to follow our own artistic arrow.”
Hopefully “SOCIETY” will encourage you to follow your very own arrow, as well as Valley on tour later this year! The band will be playing at the Wunderbus Festival in Columbus, OH and Bottlerock in Napa Valley, CA towards the end of the summer. Valley will also be heading out on tour with COIN this fall, kicking off on October 26 in Birmingham, AL.
