Sara Kays Sings Up A Storm In Her ‘Struck By Lightning’ EP

Lauren VanDerLaan

From the very moment Sara Kays picked up her first guitar, she made sure as many people as possible could hear and feel her passion for curating a mood through her music. She spent countless hours of her teenage years busking, and her persistence led her to the next level.

In 2018, Sara connected with producer Steven Martinez online, and made the trek from Indiana to Nashville to start working with him. One of the key items Sara had packed in her figurative artist toolkit was vulnerability. Each of her songs has been built with lyrics that offer an honest look at many of her experiences, including those with her mental health. Her almost 2 million followers on TikTok have connected with these songs, and today Sara is giving the world a few more to cozy up to!

Sara’s brand new Struck By Lightning EP has been in the works for the past year, and is a toast to how far she’s come as an artist in so little time. Her previous EP Camera Shy arrived last October, and has received over 100 million streams since then. The next month, she decided to post a clip of “Remember That Night” on TikTok. After it went viral, Sara dropped the official version of the single on streaming services. She also waltzed onto the Rolling Stone “Breakthrough 25” chart, made her television debut on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and received widespread critical acclaim.

Struck By Lightning is spearheaded by the new single and title track, which features UK indie pop sensation Cavetown. “Struck By Lightning” is about being by someone’s side no matter what, even when their mind might be surrounded by some thunderclouds.

Sara spilled, “A friend of mine struggled a lot with depression and didn’t necessarily always talk to me about it. It can be frustrating when you know someone’s going through something, but they won’t say anything. So, the idea is, ‘I’ll sit out there with you in silence.’ Around the same time, my ‘For You’ page had a ton of trending videos of people laying down in driveways in the rain. I brought all of that together, and it was really cool to duet with Cavetown. I’m basically saying, ‘I’d get struck by lightning for you.’

Now that’s what you call a true friend!

Sara sang up a storm on Struck By Lightning, and she’s also proven once again that she can effortlessly make her listeners feel as though she’s singing just to them personally. It’s one of the qualities that makes a singer/songwriter stand out, and Sara Kays has nailed it.

Now… if you want Sara to actually sing to you in person, be sure to grab your tickets to her very first international headline tour! The Struck By Lightning Tour will kick off on October 9 at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco, and make its way all across North America and Europe through November.
