There’s nothing cooler than being able to live out your dreams with your best friends, and that’s exactly what Sheer Element is doing!
While studying at USC, Izzy Kaye, Tabon Ward, and Jej Vinson came together to form the vocal group Sheer Element. The trio has been throwing their own spices and bits of soul into their covers of the timeless songs they all enjoy. After their TikTok cover of Ariana Grande’s “Only 1” went viral, Sheer Element have been going full speed ahead. Recently, the group released an impressive full-length cover of the Bee Gee’s classic “How Deep Is Your Love.”
As you begin to obsess over Sheer Element, here’s some important things to know about them – straight from the members themselves!
How exactly was Sheer Element formed?
On accident. We were at Tabon’s apartment drinking some wine and decided to make a short video of us singing “Only 1” by Ariana Grande for fun. We posted it, and the next day saw that it had gone viral. That was when we realized we might have something special, so we kept on making content, and now here we are!
How did your musical backgrounds look like as kids, and even college students prior to joining forces as Sheer Element? Did you all have experience playing instruments and singing in front of crowds?
We’ve all been singing since before we can remember. We met at the University of Southern California through a singing group and became best friends instantly. We were all raised with different musical influences, such as Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder and Ella Fitzgerald, so we had a lot to share with each other. Although we have very different voices, performing in our group in college helped us learn to blend together.
Please fill us in on the story behind the name “Sheer Element”!
The word “Sheer” felt like a good way to describe the silky blend of our voices together and how real we are with each other. “Element” symbolizes how we have created a unified sound despite our different backgrounds and voices. Also whenever we’re together we are in our “Element”.
What has been one of the most exciting experiences you’ve had as a group so far?
Seeing our videos get a lot of love and gaining more fans on social media has probably been the best part of our experience as a group so far. We also have so much to look forward to in this next year that we can’t wait to share!
What do you feel makes Sheer Element stand out from other vocal groups?
We think our diversity, not just in race but in our musical backgrounds make us stand out from the rest. There’s really not a group out there like us.
If you could do an IRL duet with any artist who’s song you’ve already covered, who would it be and why?
Tabon would choose Mariah Carey, JEJ would choose Bruno Mars, and Izzy would choose Frank Ocean.
What are some of your goals you hope to achieve as artists in the near future?
I mean… an international tour would be pretty cool!
