Some things seem way too good to be true, but when they do happen, it can also be too hard to move on when they come to a screeching halt. Singer/songwriter Ben Dolic shares his experience facing such a dilemma in his new single “Kissing Her, Missing You,” and managed to turn a rather gloomy situation into a bright pop anthem!
As a kid growing up in Slovenia, Ben Dolic would watch MTV and turn to music for moral support. He had dreams of becoming a singer, and decided to take the first step towards making it happen when he was 12. Ben auditioned for Slovenia’s Got Talent, and became a superstar in his home city. He found himself performing throughout Europe, and moved to Switzerland at 18 to take his career to the next level. It was bittersweet to say the least… Ben had to leave his mother, friends, and even his long-term girlfriend behind. However, Ben decided to just trust the process, as he felt the move would be the only way he’d be able to make it as an artist.
While in Switzerland, Ben learned how to speak German, which propelled him into the next step of his career. He auditioned for The Voice of Germany in 2018 with Ariana Grande’s “No Tears Left to Cry,” and joined Team Yvonne as a favorite. He finished second, but was selected the following year to represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2020. Ben’s single “Violent Thing” was selected, and it was also his first release under his current stage name Ben Dolic. While it all worked out for Ben in the end, sometimes he can’t help but look back upon the life and loved ones he left behind.
“‘Kissing Her, Missing You’ is about a phase in my life where I’d just moved to another country to pursue music and had to break up with my first girlfriend, as we couldn’t handle the long-distance,” Ben spills. “I started dating around and using dating apps but all of the attempts left me feeling empty, as I just wanted one specific person, no matter how beautiful, smart or funny anyone else was. It’s about attempting to get under someone to get over someone else and completely failing. We (Ben and Gethin Williams) wrote the song in a hotel room over Zoom during the release weekend for ‘Stuck in My Mind’. It used to sound completely different and a lot rougher, but we totally turned it around. We did pretty much everything ourselves, I recorded the vocals in my bedroom and the single artwork was shot in my manager’s kitchen. I’ve had to keep this release a secret for such a long time and I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”
