There’s so much new music out today, and I feel like a dog chasing its tail as I try to listen to it all. It’s exciting, a little bit overwhelming, but most importantly, it feels like a reward after a long week. Here’s some of my favorite new projects to fuel your weekend soundtrack!
Alexander 23 – Aftershock
If you haven’t already been convinced that Alexander 23 doesn’t know how to make a bad song, his new album Aftershock will seal the deal. The debut album from the Grammy nominated artist includes a few songs we’ve already heard (such as “The Hardest Part” and “Crash”). However, there’s a plethora of gorgeous new songs that’ll give listeners a look into the mind of someone who has been left picking up the pieces after a breakup.
Alexander spilled, “My album is about the grieving process of a breakup. Being heartbroken, thinking you’re over it when you’re obviously not, meeting new people, questioning yourself and all your relationships. If the breakup was the emotional earthquake, the creation of this album was the emotional aftershock.”
There’s something particularly cool about the vibe of “Cosplay.” It feels like a Saturday afternoon around 3PM, eating the clam chowder and pizza bread from Souplantation (R.I.P.) It just HITS. And just like the best buffet you’ve ever been to, “Cosplay” is a song that’ll keep you coming back for another round of replays!
Billy Lockett – “Not Okay”
British songwriter Billy Lockett grew up writing songs with his dad in their cellar. Next thing he knew, KT Tunstall invited him on a UK tour, he performed on The Late Late Show With James Corden, and his music racked up over 100 million streams. The emotive songwriter’s new single “Not Okay” offers a real perspective on those times when our impulsive thoughts seem to take over the stirring wheel.
“’Not Okay’ is about the desperate and irrational things we can sometimes find ourselves doing to get someone back in our lives,” says Billy. “It’s about that kinda situation where you’re just not thinking straight, and your emotions seem to take over any form of logic and you suddenly realize ‘Oh god I’ve lost my head.’ This song is just so special to me, the production, the concept, the lyrics, I feel like I just got everything right with this.”
Gavin Haley – I hate you, Don’t Leave Me
Creating your art can be very healing. For LA-based singer/songwriter Gavin Haley, putting together I hate you, Don’t Leave Me was a form of therapy throughout 2021, helping him push through difficult times. As you jam out to songs such as “Mine,” “Body Language,” and “Heroes,” Gavin Haley hopes that the album will be a body of work you can connect with through thick and thin. He labels the project as “An album to bop in the car and one that can bring together all types of people who are searching for more.”
Kira Kosarin – Something New
It’s a BIGGGG day for Kira Kosarin. The former Nickelodeon star just dropped her new EP Something New, meant to encourages listeners to just give love a chance. I’m here for it!
Kira spilled, “This EP includes all of the growth from 22-years-old to 25-years-old, learning how to live with yourself and what habits actually work to take care of yourself long-term. We enter into every relationship, be it romantic or interpersonal, with so much baggage in terms of how we’ve been treated in the past and the way we’ve learned the world must work based on those experiences. It’s a story of meeting somebody where you have all of these preconceived notions of what’s going to go wrong. Your mind is changed though, because you haven’t encountered a relationship like this before. Maybe you can let your guard down and trust. It’s an ode to domesticity and those rituals that make your home a safe environment.”
Lizzo – Special
HFHWEAHGHREHGHERAHGESDRHSETD IT’S HERE. PRAISE JESUS. THAT’S ALL I’VE GOTTA SAY.
Sadie Cannon – “Healed Girl Summer”
Nashville-based Sadie Cannon wants nothing but the best for us this summer, literally. With her new single “Healed Girl Summer,” Sadie is not only serving up bops, but wishes for our well being!
Sadie says, “We’ve all heard of ‘Hot Girl Summer’ but what happens when all the slay queens take a break from the club and take time to reflect and self discover, that’s right ‘Healed Girl Summer.’ This anthem promotes self love and an escape from modern social pressures.”
Sophie Pecora – To Save the World
Rising singer-songwriter/rapper Sophie Pecora has today unveiled her latest project: To Save
The World. The 5-track project includes previously released songs like “I’m in a Rut” and “I’m
Fine”. She’s also revealed a lyric video for the title track. To Save The World EP is Sophie’s third
project to date, and the follow up to her Wildflower EP.
18-year-old singer-songwriter Sophie Pecora may not be a superhero, but she knows that music can hopefully lead to change… and so her new EP, To Save the World, was born!
“I was feeling overwhelmed by the news and what’s happening in the world,” Sophie says. “I was feeling like if all it took was someone to care a lot, I would be the one to save the world. I care so much and was wishing that how I was feeling could translate to saving other people who are going through so much hardship, heartache, and pain.”
Sophie says of the title track, “As I was writing this song, I was thinking about all the songs I write and that I get so many messages every day from people telling me how much my songs help them. They say that they feel like I’m putting into words exactly how they are feeling, and it makes them feel so much better. I thought – maybe caring really could help people? Maybe it’s true that me and anyone who cares so deeply can help the world in some way by doing something from the heart.”
