London born and bred singer/songwriter Kate Stewart doesn’t want anyone getting in the way of your goals, and her new single “The Game” encourages listeners to reclaim their power and chase after the exact things they want!

Ever since Kate Stewart was a child, she knew she had a passion for being on stage. She grew up in a family that embraced the performing arts, and who encouraged her to pursue her own musical endeavors. After falling in love with doing musical theater, Kate went on to performing on stage as a recording artist.

Needless to say, Kate knows a thing or two about being a boss of her own game! I got to catch up with her about her new single, and her forthcoming EP.

In your own words, describe the meaning of “The Game.”

Even though this song is talking about something more broad, such as life. ‘The Game’s The Game’ is just a thing that me and my friends always say. I always find it hard to explain to people exactly what it means, but in context, I will say it, almost instead of the quote “well that’s life”. Something will go very wrong, or very right and I’ll say “the games the game” because often life has a funny way of dealing its cards.

How long would you say it took to create this song?

It only took a day. I made this song with my brother David and a writer called Jessica Agombar. We write a lot together, and both of them get exactly what I’m going for with my music, so every time we work it’s very quick and we always produce a smash.

You have now released a collection of singles that will lead up to your new EP ‘You Had To Be There.’ Were these singles released in this particular order on purpose?

Kind of. I always wanted to start with “Hate You” first, because it was a clear introduction to my new sound. The video also reintroduced my look and what I’m going for moving forward, which is very fashion focused. “Numb” came next because it stayed in the same vein but just elevated the sound and the energy, and this one felt like a strong contender to go 3rd, because again it moves up in energy and sounds a little more big and pop, which is what some of the tracks on the EP sound like.

In your honest opinion, what’s the most challenging aspect of putting together an EP or longer body of work?

For me, I am a hoarder of music. I write so much, and because I work with only a handful of incredible producers and writers, we always make music that I actually love. So narrowing it down to only a few songs for a project is really hard for me, because I get very attached to my music. However I do always know which ones I love the most, because they’re the ones that I just continue to play over and over again. I also want to make sure that the project sounds cohesive.

Colors can totally create a vibe. What swayed you towards opting for a black and white look for “The Game”’s music video?

I wanted to go with black and white, because I didn’t want anything to distract from this song. This song to me sounds like something from a movie soundtrack. It feels very epic and expensive, and black and white to me also feels very expensive and classy, therefore I went with this so you listened more to the song and the lyrics rather than getting distracted by the visuals.

Is there something you hope listeners keep in mind as they listen to “The Game” and continue to anticipate ‘You Had To Be There’?

I just hope people relate to the lyrics. I have written about a lot of topics that have actually happened in my life, or happened in my friends lives and I feel very strongly that they are relatable. I just want people to feel an emotion, whatever it may be.

What is your favorite board or card game?

I’m actually not a massive fan of board games or card games, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be cheat or bullshit!
