There’s quite a bit that can be said about the past two years. Many may feel a sense of regret and resentment, as well as a desire to make up for lost time. Rosie Darling’s new EP Golden Age is an opportunity for the LA-based indie pop artist to shed a light on all the emotions she experienced during a time of uncertainty, as well as show off her musical versatility to listeners near and far.

Now in her 20’s, Rosie has blossomed into her own version of a superstar. Her first official single “Coping” has amassed over 40 million streams across various platforms, further fueling her burning desire to keep sharing her stories with the world. Hear some of her latest and greatest with Golden Age!

To help you dive into the EP, Rosie Darling will break down some of the things you need to know about her project in this Q&A.

Pick two colors to describe your new EP!

ORANGE AND YELLOW!

Can you tell us about the early stages of Golden Age’s creation?

I think it was mostly during the pandemic. I wanted to find a way to capture the feeling of being stuck or being alone and not knowing how to cope with all of the negativity that I was hearing about on the news or around the world. It was such a distinct time that we all loved through and even re-integrating back into the world post-covid was challenging. I just wanted to capture the wide range of emotions we were all feeling during such uncertain times while also keeping it light so it wasn’t too depressing to listen ti.

At first, did you feel like the pandemic was posing a challenge to your creativity? If so, how were you able to overcome it?

I had a lot of time to write and to think, but it was definitely a time where things felt slow but I got to focus a lot on finishing songs and creating the next EP, so I think in a lot of ways i WAS mostly struggling to find meaning during this time but I ended up writing about that so naturally this time lent itself towards a lot of existential thoughts and you can hear that in a lot of the writing on this EP.

When you think of the words Golden Age in the context of your youth, what are some of the things that immediately come to mind?

Just being with friends and people you love with no pressure! Having fun and exploring the world! Watching sunsets, driving in your car with the windows down, celebrating your friends, and living your best life!

Since this is your second EP, was there anything in particular you set out to do differently in comparison to your first EP, Coping?

I mostly wanted to take more risks on the production! I felt like Coping had a lot of slower songs and I wanted to challenge myself to write more upbeat songs. I think the lyrics on Golden Age are still reminiscent of Coping, but the songs are a bit faster which I think will be really fun to sing live!

Let’s dive a bit deeper into your new single “What A Convincing Illusion.” Despite how difficult it may be, do you feel as though sharing the lessons learned from a failed relationship is an essential part of the healing process?

I love this song! I wrote this with some close friends and although we have all experienced some sort of break up, we all process differently! For me, I like to write and shape stories through lyrics, but overall processing your feelings is important! I’m so happy people are connecting with this song 🙂

Golden Age also introduces listeners to “Say Less.” Can you share the story of how the song came about?

This song is just a rant about feeling frustrated with life, friendships, relationships, and my generation! I love this song because it doesn’t follow a lot of normal song rules in terms of structure but I probably connect the most with this song on the EP!

The title track “Golden Age” reflects upon many missed opportunities. However, it seems as though making this EP was your version of “making lemonade” as life threw us all a ton of lemons over the past two years. Can you pinpoint some of the sweetest moments you’ve experienced as an artist during the pandemic?

I think I’m just getting to know myself more. I’ve experienced a lot of changes with friends and people I am close to but overall it has led me to new experiences and I’ve been writing some of my favorite songs during this time so I am grateful for all of the good and the bad because I think it’s just part of the process and I hope other people will find some healing in these songs too.
