Honestly, it’s time to give your undivided attention to Nashville-based singer/songwriter/undisputed pop girlie Colaine.
Colaine always dreamed of becoming a singer, and it all started unfolding when she was 12 years old. “I like to think I’m a product of the generation of Disney pop star propaganda,” she explains. “Like Cheetah Girls, Hannah Montana… some people were like oh my God, what a fun little show. I just took it too goddamn seriously, and now here I am. I saw Mitchie in Camp Rock have her little songbook, and I was like… I’m gonna do that!”
Colaine’s mother fully supported her musical ambitions, taking her to open mics and local talent competitions as a teen. These experiences were fulfilling for a while, but when Colaine entered high school, she started feeling a bit restricted. She had a desire to create larger than life pop anthems, which deserved to be heard outside of the walls of a coffee shop.
The next step towards making this goal a reality was to move from upstate New York to Nashville. Living in a city with such a thriving music scene and attending Belmont University for a music business degree was quite a change of scenery of Colaine, especially during the pandemic. But balancing school, work, and studio time wasn’t a piece of cake.
“When I was in school, I was working two jobs. I had an internship, and I had class. I wasn’t able to be one of those girlies who was in the studio every day, but I’m chasing it now. I’m bartending, and on my days off, I’m on that grind! I’m in the studio, writing, and meeting people.”
Colaine’s new fruit of her labor, “Honest (Would It Have Killed You?)” captures the feelings of frustration, numbness, and confusion after being lied to and left hanging dry by someone you cared about.
(Now, imagine experiencing all of that… while high. It’s a true story from Colaine.)
Colaine spills, “I was in the trenches, and I was like… I’m gonna call him. It was pretty messy of me, but I found out, and I was already geeking out… I was crying, and I opened my notes app… and that (the song) is what came out. A few days later, my friend Gabe (he’s my producer) we had a session blocked off to write. I was like, let me open this notes app and see if what I wrote is coherent. I sang some of it into the mic, and he thought it was cool. We recorded what I had, I took a week to finish writing it, went back, and was like… this is so cool!”
Overall, Colaine feels a level of excitement about this song that she hasn’t felt in a while. She says, “You’re throwing a lot of shit at the wall and hoping something is gonna stick… in terms of people listening to it, and you liking it. I’ve written so much shit that I cannot stand, but you just gotta get it out! This was just so satisfying.”
