Alt-pop duo joan is back with their new track “face” – a song for those who would do just about anything to go back to a certain moment in time or to see a certain person again.

joan (Alan Benjamin Thomas and Steven Rutherford) co-wrote “face” alongside Cris Stayton. It all started on a writing session over Zoom, which turned out to be so much more deeply personal than originally imagined. Honest reflections on how someone could long for moments that seemed to slip away began to transpire, and all three artists yielded a song that can easily be regarded as a career highlight. joan also crafted a very fitting nostalgic soundscape for “face,” featuring gentle synths and rich drum and guitar melodies.

“This song is about time and how quickly it slips away,” joan says. “In the blink of an eye, something that seems like it could go on forever is gone, and what you previously took for granted, you would do literally anything to get a mundane second of it back.  Nothing is supposed to last forever, but sometimes you have to lose it to understand how special the moments you had together were.”

joan also released an accompanying music video for the song, which takes a live performance to the next level. “We wanted to make it feel like a performance video with a twist,” joan says. “We shot Steven performing the song separately and then projected him onto the wall while Alan performed. It feels surreal, it feels connected even though we weren’t. There’s something eerie and beautiful about it.”
