Born and raised in Trinidad, Trish Ousman was immersed in music starting at a very young age. In fact, she recalls being told by her mother that she could sing before she could even talk! “I feel like being in the Caribbean and in the islands, you’re always exposed to music,” she shared.
Once she reached middle school, Ousman began to write songs, and worked diligently to grow as a songwriter. However, most of her work was kept under wraps, as she went through a period of feeling shy about others recognizing her musical talents. “I wouldn’t even sing in front of my mom and dad and brother,” she said. “I would have to hide away in the closet when they’re all gone and record my songs. It’s very funny now, because people from high school find me on Instagram or TikTok. They’re like, ‘I didn’t know you could sing!’”
Ousman eventually overcame these feelings, and started to release her music online. After sharing her heartfelt single “With A Smile” earlier this year, she recently returned to release “Love,” a bubbly pop song about the emotional high one may feel when pursuing someone they like. Ousman found inspiration for the song by watching clips of The Vampire Diaries on TikTok a few years ago. She wrote the hook, and initially dismissed it as being “really bad.” She revisited the hook later down the road, refined it, and eventually released a song that is worthy of being your new favorite summer anthem.
Reflecting on her journey, Ousman shared some wisdom she wished she could tell her younger self: “Don’t be shy. Don’t let people scare you away from singing and doing stuff like that.” She encourages letting supportive people into your creative process, as the love and encouragement she’s received have been transformative. She also believes that consistency is key, so she encourages aspiring songwriters to keep writing!
“You only get better at something if you keep doing it,” she emphasized.
Looking ahead, Trish is excited to release more music and embark on new adventures, including a trip with friends that she hopes will spark fresh inspiration. “Inspiration is everywhere,” she said.
