Entering moistbreezy’s ‘Breezy’ Sonic Oasis

Everyone needs their own little getaway, and moistbreezy created her own with her new EP Breezy!

Ida Chelengar moved from Massachusetts to New York City in pursuit of a film school education. After seeing so many of her favorite artists live on almost a daily basis, she decided to take up music production! Ida began to upload electronic sketches on Soundcloud under the alias moistbreezy, and was soon surrounded with fellow bedroom producers with a common vision.

In 2015, moistbreezy’s single “Running,” a collaboration with EDM duo CETANA, was signed to Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records. It was the label’s first release of 2016, and the track made its way to VICE’s “The 101 Best EDM Songs of All Time” list. The following year, moistbreezy released her Miss Me EP as a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood! Since then, she has remained a notable force in NYC’s dance music scene.

moistbreezy is now back in Massachusetts, and is heading in a dance-pop direction. Breezy mixes her electronic influences and songwriting abilities into a glistening sonic blend!

My philosophy as of late has been that we need more art that is full of hope, that imagines a better future, even if it’s a fantasy,” moistbreezy shares. “When we envision a better world, we are more empowered to create it. I looked to projects that span the 80s, 90s, Y2K, and early 10s for inspiration: from Phil Collins and Sade to Kylie Minogue, Aqua, and Madonna’s Ray of Light to the euphoria of Rustie. With Breezy, I wanted to make a ray of light, a warm breeze on a summer’s day — an oasis. I created a place, incorporating sound design of ocean waves and birds chirping, crafting synth melodies that sound like crystals refracting sunlight and fairy dust. This is an escape, a sonic vacation.”

Whether it be physically or mentally, a vacation is something most of us can agree that we certainly need! The past few months have been a time of bringing new projects to life for many. While moistbreezy got started on Breezy before the pandemic, the circumstances fueled the project more than ever.

She says, “This project has actually been in the works for about 3 years now. I got the original idea for it early in 2017, exhausted after attending protests every night, dealing with drama in my artistic scene, and confused about what direction I wanted to go in as an artist with everything that was going on in the world at that time. I had this idea of creating a sonic oasis – a work that I could come back to to find light and peace no matter what chaos might be happening in my own life and the real world around me. Since then, I pursued a few different aesthetic directions for the mixtape before returning to my original idea a year ago. I wrote about half the songs on the project before the pandemic, but I think that original thesis I had for the project, that it should be a ray of light in a dark world, an escape from reality, really helped me keep going with it once the lockdowns hit. Having this project to work on has kept me sane and busy during these hectic times, and having to stay at home has actually empowered me in a way to create my own music videos! I’ve also felt that the movement towards online shows has brought me back to my internet roots. The artists in my underground pop and electronic communities inspire me everyday with the ways they’ve been able to innovate under the current circumstances!”
