Olivia Rodrigo Rolls Out Original Single ‘drivers license’

We can all remember just how big of a deal it was to get our drivers license and/or learning permits. It was as if the world instantly opened up a whole lot more. It’s a game changer.

Today is a game changer for Olivia Rodrigo too! The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star just released her debut single “drivers license.”

Back in the summer, Olivia uploaded a snippet of the song on Instagram. Having seen the reactions of her fans, she decided to head back into the studio with collaborator Dan Nigro and put the finishing touches on the track.

“When I came up with ‘drivers license,’ I was going through a heartbreak that was so confusing to me, so multifaceted,” Olivia confesses. “Putting all those feelings into a song made everything seem so much simpler and clearer—and at the end of the day, I think that’s really the whole purpose of songwriting. There’s nothing like sitting at the piano in my bedroom and writing a really sad song. It’s truly my favorite thing in the world.”

Olivia Rodrigo is a young woman of many talents. The 17-year-old played the role of Page Olvera in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark, which aired from 2016 to 2019. Soon after, Olivia took on the starring role of Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. On top of acting in the show, Olivia wrote “All I Want” for the show’s soundtrack. The global hit made its way onto the Billboard Hot 100, and has even received RIAA Gold certification.

Besides releasing “drivers license,” Olivia has many more tunes to share this year with her forthcoming EP.
