Connecticut-based indie pop singer/songwriter Lexi Mariah has had her share of moments where her heart was played like a card game. However, she’d come out victorious, and her uplifting new bop “Queen of Broken Hearts” will hopefully motivate those in similar situations to rise as winners too!
Music and creative expression has always been a high priority for Lexi Mariah. Although she didn’t enter the realm of songwriting until she was 14, Lexi has plenty of fond memories of playing the piano with her grandmother as a child!
“My grandma brought over some piano books and taught me some songs on my little electric keyboard,” Lexi recalls. “We made a habit of playing songs together every week when she came to visit, and she was the first person to start teaching me the basics of the piano. That was also around the first time I ever sang in front of people.”
Lexi then started performing Kelly Clarkson songs at her local restaurant’s karaoke night, gaining experience entertaining a crowd. As she got older, Lexi began finding a love for turning her own stories into lyrics. She spent a few years writing plenty of material, and started going to studio sessions when she turned 18. While Lexi still had a liking for performing at open mic nights, the pandemic caused her to switch gears a bit. She says, “The extra time at home allowed me the opportunity to learn so much more about songwriting (shoutout to Taylor Swift and her incredible writing on Folklore and Evermore) and write so many new songs.”
One of those songs is “Queen of Broken Hearts,” which compares the challenges presented in a relationship to the tricky moves in a card game.
Lexi spills, “I wrote this song when I was in a very confusing, ‘up and down’ relationship with someone who would always twist my words, ruin things for themself and then try to blame me for their mistakes. This person would constantly try to gaslight me and would always turn situations around to make it seem like I was in the wrong, when it was actually the other way around. Luckily I was able to see through their manipulativeness and would always joke to myself saying ‘guess I’m the queen of broken hearts’ whenever they were acting like I was the one who hurt them, which is how I came up with the concept for this song. Lately I just feel like relationships and even friendships are a gamble and you truly never know exactly what you’re getting yourself into. Sometimes people in your life will ‘play fair’ and sometimes they won’t. They might try to avoid showing their true colors at first, but the truth eventually will always come through.”
