Happy Friday! We made it to the end of the week, and of course, we’ve gotta celebrate that with five new songs to add to your playlists. Here’s my New Music Friday picks for this week from Mae Muller, Alicia Creti, BLACKPINK, Rob Roth, and GAYLE!

Mae Muller – “MTJL”

Mae Muller is back with “MTJL,” a track that allows her to be as open as possible about her insecurities. The song arrives just a few weeks before Mae releases her debut album Sorry I’m Late – out September 15th.

“I think it was really important for me to have a moment where it was just going to be really stripped-back, just me and a guitar,” Mae says. “I just wanted it to be a diary entry – I wasn’t worried about the usual verse, pre-chorus, chorus structure of the song as such, I just wanted to get it off my chest. I feel like as humans we’re very good at being hard on ourselves and we all want what we can’t have, so this track was just a big outpouring of all my insecurities. I definitely have a lot but I’m learning to accept them, it’s what makes us human. I think this is probably the best song I’ve written lyrically, and I’m very proud of it.”

Alicia Creti – “Pity Party”

If you love powerhouse vocalists, you’ll definitely be adding Alicia Creti to your stan list after listening to her new single “Pity Party.” Growing up in the suburbs of Montreal, Alicia started singing when she was only three years old! She’s been singing ever since, and started writing her own songs just a few years later.

In 2020, Alicia began to share covers of songs from some of her favorite R&B artists on social media. Check out her responses to cover requests on her TikTok!

All of the love and support shown by millions of viewers worldwide led Alicia to release her debut single “Congratulations” in 2022. Alicia is just getting started, and her latest single “Pity Party” proves that she’ll be here to stay.

Alicia says, “I am a firm believer in feeling all your emotions to get through something. This allows you to heal and process what’s weighing on you. This song is a mantra to yourself that it’s okay to be human, but not to dwell and live in the sadness.”

BLACKPINK – “The Girls”

Here’s BLACKPINK’s spicy new song “THE GIRLS”! It’s an OST for their mobile game BLACKPINK THE GAME.

Rob Roth – “Awol”

Singer/songwriter Rob Roth understands how draining the corporate world can be. His new single “Awol” is an ode to feeling overwhelmed and at your wits end when it comes to having to follow a rather bland status quo.

It might be hard to believe, but Rob Roth took his very first vocal lesson in 2019! After a series of sports related injuries, Rob started making a pivot towards music. All throughout the pandemic, he worked hard to practice playing the guitar and sharpening his vocals. Things really started falling into place in 2021, when Rob released a collection of singles and an EP the following year!

“Awol” is Rob’s first release of 2023.

GAYLE – “leave me for dead”

Dear GAYLE, thanks for blessing us with another dark, angsty, alt-pop anthem! According to the singer, her new single “leave me for dead” is a reflection of her previous relationships coming to an end and that moment when she realized… it’s all over… for good.

GAYLE says, “this song is a eulogy to my past relationships and the intensity of the feeling that someone leaving me is a permanent decision.  once you leave, you’re gone. you have to make the decision to leave me for dead.”
