Demie Cao is an LA-based pop/rap artist who just made her official US debut last week with her new single “YUNG”!
Demie, aka “Demie the Destroyer”, signed with 5A label in 2014 and worked with them as a trainee and through her debut. Demie made her official debut in China with her single “Night Vision“. The track landed on Billboard Asia’s 2019 “Best of Rap: URBAN ASIA Vol. 2.” She has written for other Chinese and Korean artists with Mister Rocks Music Group, and in 2017 she released a Korean track “CHUNGDAM MODELS” featuring Ace Hashimoto and Rekstizzy.
With a full EP on the way, 2020 is sure to be thrilling for Demie! Kicking things off with “YUNG”, Demie is giving listeners a genuine look into her life. “It’s really a song about growing up,” she said. “I wanted to celebrate my youth, but also present it as a melancholic anthem to my becoming an adult. I also saw it as a bit of a metaphorical love song. It’s like a recollection of good memories with a person (aka youth), and moving on from them.”
I recently got to chat with Demie about “YUNG’, her next moves, and what she’s up to! Check it out below!
Hi Demie! Would you mind introducing yourself to everyone?
I’m Demie, you know me as Demie The Destroyer, Rough Ballernina, just turned 23, cat mom, USC grad, I have an EP coming out called Airplane Mode which is my debut EP, and “YUNG” is the first single on it!
That’s awesome! So, congrats on your new single “YUNG”. I know this is like a coming of age track, but can you maybe dive in a little deeper on what this song means to you?
I wrote this song right before I graduated college and was having this quarter life crisis, like all my friends had 25 year plans and knew exactly what they were going to do and I was just kinda lost. That quarter life crisis kind of got personified into this song.
I feel that. It’s stressful growing up honestly.
It is. It is.
If there’s anything you could tell your younger self, what would it be?
Just to chill out! Spend time with friends and family, travel more, I would say invest in Bitcoin, just chill and relax.
What is something you hope listeners realize when they’re listening to “YUNG”?
Well I don’t really want to dictate what anyone feels when I put a song out. I just feel a certain way when I write a song, and when it’s out in my hands I just allow the audience to feel whatever they want to feel and do whatever they want to do with it.
I know you also designed the covert art for “YUNG” yourself, which is super cool. Besides making music, what other artistic things do you do?
I draw. I sometimes write poetry. I dance ballet and that’s kind of how I got my start in music and everything so.
Can you kinda tell us more about how you got your start in music?
I started out dancing, and I always loved music… I just didn’t want to let go of my dance passion. Then I saw K-Pop for the first time and they mesh that so well, like put those together so well and it really inspired me to just go for it.
“YUNG” is the first single off your new EP, which we will all be enjoying very soon. Could you perhaps give us a little heads up on what we can expect for the EP?
It’s a seven track EP, so it’s kind of long. Most of the songs are more upbeat like dancey. So there’s going to be a lot more dancing in the music vidoes. Yung was just kinda one of those one-off ‘I was feeling some type of way’ so I kind of just put that out there. The next song is actually going to be a collab with Holly who produced most of the album, and he’s super dope. It’s going to go really hard so look out for that.
So I know right now things are very very VERY interesting. How have you been using this time to stay creative?
Well I’ve been doing a lot, because I can’t really go to the studio that much right now. I’ve been doing a lot of other creative things like, I write a lot of emo poetry on my Demie Makes Art! page. I’ve been drawing more, I read books, and I’ve been playing a lot of Animal Crossing where I just design the houses on my island!
That’s cool! Animal Crossing is fun.
Yeah, it is. I’m like obsessed with that right now!
I bet! So.. if you could do a virtual performance with any artist, who would it be?
Leikeli 47. I really really wish to collab with her. She’s super dope!
And finally, to wrap things up, what was the last song you listened to?
I think it was “Window” by Still Woozy.
